The high altitude of around 8000 affects around one in four visitors to the mountains, especially those coming from sea level. Make sure you’re prepared for the effects of traveling to high altitude.
True Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is characterized by headache, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, nausea and often, vomiting. This diagnosis is not well understood. It affects the young and the old, as well as the healthy and the frail, without distinction. AMS can have severe manifestations such as fluid in the lungs (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) and even Neurologic manifestations. The first line treatment for AMS is Oxygen.
Actually, quite a lot. It is important when coming to altitude that you are and continue to be well hydrated. Drinking clear liquids and avoiding significant alcohol consumption will really help. Some people coming from sea level will be benefit from an overnight stay in Denver before “coming up the hill.” This recommendation is based upon the higher incidence of AMS the quicker a person ascends to the altitudes in our region. For those who have experienced AMS in the past, taking medication prior to arrival and a couple of days thereafter, may help to alleviate a repeat occurrence. Feel free to contact us or your home physician to discuss any of these suggestions.
Yes. Many individuals who come to the mountains to play will be affected by the higher altitude but not have the classic symptoms of AMS. If you are experiencing “hangover” like symptoms or just don’t feel as fit as you would expect when you arrive in the mountains – or, you want to enhance your feeling of well being, Oxygen can provide a welcome benefit.
Most everyone will acclimate to the altitude, but this may take a week or more. An oxygen concentrator can help to bridge the gap. Of course, if you are worried that your symptoms indicate something more severe, please feel free to contact our associated medical practice, Alpine Mobile Physicians, who provide affordable house call medical services.
If you are feeling any of the symptoms described above and they started when you first ascended, then Oxygen should help to greatly relieve your symptoms.
Altitude sickness can affect any person any time they are at altitude regardless of age, sex, or physical condition.
By law, Oxygen is a prescription medication. That is why here at O24U, our oxygen is provided by a physician or their assistant. You do not pay extra for our physicians to oversee your request and authorize the use of Oxygen to enhance your well being at altitude. We believe in the legal and ethical delivery of this medication.
